The Japan Media Arts Festival has been an annual event since 1997. This years winner are a great selection again. Specially Oups by Marcio Ambrosio (Brazil) and the short movie Kudan by Kimura Taku (Japan) is worth mentioning.

Once I wrote as short article complaining about the domination of western design practice. Now, it's wonderful to come across this site: Creative Roots. A blog where design is categorised by countries showing the great variation, and therefore identity, design could have.
It's inspiring to see how Larry Cuba created the wonderful Star Wars special effects with such primitive computers.
